Join us on Sunday December 15 at 2pm to see the The Sydney Youth Orchestra performing Olivier Messiaen’s “Turangalîla-Symphonie”—an iconic 20th-century masterpiece that combines love, joy, movement, and the mysteries of time. Conducted by the internationally acclaimed Stanley Dodds, this is a rare opportunity to experience a work of immense power and complexity live.Messiaen’s “Turangalîla-Symphonie” is renowned for its intricate, exotic instrumentation, including the unique Ondes Martenot and a virtuosic solo piano part. The ten-movement symphony creates a sonic world drawing on Messiaen’s fascination with bird songs, Hindu rhythms, and Balinese gamelan sounds. According to the composer, “Turanga” represents the flow of time and rhythm, while “Turangalîla” is a hymn to love, joy, and the essence of life itself. This rare performance promises to be a profound live experience, uniting bold orchestration and intricate themes.
This performance is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for both the audience and the young musicians of SYO,” says Stanley Dodds. “Messiaen’s music is a true exploration of sound and emotion, and I am thrilled to lead The Sydney Youth Orchestra through this profound journey.” Stanley Dodds brings extensive experience to SYO as Principal Conductor of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra and Chief Conductor of Poland's Cavatina Philharmonic Orchestra. The program also includes The Philharmonic Orchestra - Powered By SYO performing Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue with special guest piano soloist Kelly Liu. This is a musical and cultural event not to be missed—join The Sydney Youth Orchestra and Stanley Dodds for a rare opportunity to experience the “Turangalîla-Symphonie” live.
This event is free and tickets are essential.
