Creative Communities School Competition

As part of our White Bay Power Station community engagement, Placemaking NSW invited the next generation of creative minds to showcase their talents and ideas for the future of White Bay Power Station. Students got creative and in these works you can see what inspires them about White Bay Power Station.

I love the White Bay Power Station building because it’s a beautiful place so I started by drawing the building & then added the water park slides, pools, splash zone & even a giant bird bath! I wanted to make White Bay into a water park because there’s no fun parks near where we live. Lots of the building shapes already look like water slides & there’s lots of space for more.

My dad and I talked about how I could draw the white Bay power station and we decided that I could do the fun and play category but we didn’t know what to do so we thought about all sorts of ideas and then my dad got busy and I had to do it at my grans.I drew it from a photo that my dad and I took at night. The photo was a bit dark so I wanted to make it colourful to be all about fun and play. I made as many colours as I could with the pens I had. When my dad wasn’t busy he helped me choose colours and we talked about light and shade. I drew stars and planets because I think the chimneys are so high that they can reach up into the sky. I didn’t really know how to draw the car so my dad helped me by giving me the idea of like it where the  wheels and stuff would be.

I drew the White Bay Power Station as Affordable Housing, because NSW needs more homes for people. Living in the Inner west at White Bay Power Station means families can enjoy living by the water, close to the city, maybe their jobs and schools. Including my school. They would be able to have a view over the bay to the city, and there is public transport already available.

I imagine what the power station might be used for in the future and thought of 8 ideas and spaced them over the next 8 years. I’ve labeled each year and at the center of my artwork is a larger drawing of the white bay power station that links them all together.

I live right near White Bay Power Station. My work is inspired by community and fun and the tall thin towers and the huge spaces inside White Bay. It made me think about all the amazing things that could be in that space - including spaces for kids and families, for art, for cooking, for theatre and music. I want this space to be full of natural play areas, lots of cool free activities, and a lively place at night time with theatre and concert halls. I wish everyone will want to hang out doing fun things together. The page on the right shows the surrounding suburb with more green spaces and a light rail down Victoria Road.

My entry is inspired by my visit to the White Bay Power Station, I loved looking around and reading about the history of the building and all the machines inside. The explosion in 1958 really interested me. I have created a collage to show how the old building and the big explosion can blast the building into the future. I also love science so I would love to see a space for kids to do cool science experiments and this would be the perfect place! Come to the Children’s Science Centre Sydney for some explosive fun!

Discovered that the power station used to run on coal when visiting for the art exhibition and decided to make it run again on clean power. Then decided to use found things from around the house to make the film, M&Ms, toilet rolls and cuddly toys.

I wanted to draw a picture of the Whitebay Power Station with some Aboriginal Art in it so that we can always acknowledge the wangal peopole in the future of white bay power station. You can see the two chimneys above the white bay power station construction. I drew some wangal symbols and i drew the aboriginal flag in black red and yellow dots.
