Remembering Christmas at White Bay

Christmas pasts at White Bay Power Station were a celebration of community, creativity, and festive cheer.

At the heart of Christmas celebrations at White Bay was the Entertainment Hall, a charming space where workers and their families gathered for music, laughter, and shared joy. Though much of this history is fragmented, the stories we do know highlight the spirit of the White Bay community — a spirit that continues to inspire us today as the hall undergoes conservation work to welcome new generations.

A place for celebrations and gatherings

From lively dances to important meetings, the Entertainment Hall played a central role in fostering camaraderie and a sense of belonging among the staff all year around.

Far from just a workplace amenity, the hall offered staff a place to connect, unwind, and showcase their talents. It was a refuge where creativity flourished, bringing people together for joyous moments of holiday cheer.

Each December, the hall became a vital venue for Christmas events for White Bay Power Station and its sister facilities in Pyrmont, Ultimo, and Balmain. Workers from across the stations, along with their families, gathered to watch comical sketches, hear spirited carols, and enjoy live musical performances.

One standout figure was Bernie Stone, White Bay’s Head Timekeeper, whose precision with timesheets was matched only by his prowess at the piano. Known for leading swing and dance bands in the 1930s and 1940s, Bernie brought his talent to the White Bay stage, filling the hall with timeless melodies.

A community celebration

Christmas at White Bay Power Station was all about community.  The annual visit from Santa Claus was an annual highlight that delighted local children, who received gifts amidst the laughter and warmth of their families. Archival photos from the late 1950s capture the hall’s festive atmosphere: a pianist absorbed in his performance, a choir in mid-song, and families seated together, their faces lit with joy. The Entertainment Hall wasn’t limited to White Bay workers alone. Staff from nearby power stations joined the celebrations, making it a city-wide affair that showcased Sydney’s industrial community. The hall echoed with stories, songs, and shared traditions, creating memories that have stood the test of time.

Preserving the Entertainment Hall’s legacy

Today, as the Entertainment Hall undergoes careful conservation, it stands as a testament to the power of community and creativity. Once a haven for holiday celebrations, it will reopen to welcome modern-day gatherings, events, and cultural experiences. The preservation of this iconic hall is not only about protecting its structure but also about honouring the rich history it represents. From talented pianists to family traditions, the stories of White Bay Power Station’s Christmases remind us of the enduring magic of the season—a time to celebrate, connect, and create lasting memories.
